What Britain Bought in 2015 - Review

On Channel 4 recently Mary Portas documented on 'What Britain Bought in 2015'. Whilst watching it I was amazed at how much what was being said within the documentary, linked directly to what I was learning within my University course (FCP). At the very beginning of the programme the first thing mentioned was 'Charlotte Crosby's 3 minute belly blitz' and what I found particularly interesting was how, without the use of social media the DVD would have sold no where near as many copies. Another thing that surprised me was how different social media platforms produced different selling results; Charlotte had posted on Facebook and then again on Twitter, amazingly the post on Facebook had no effect on sales, however after one post on Twitter sales increased enormously, the DVD shot to the top of the sales knocking every other person away. What intrigued me about this, was just how influential social media has become, over the last few years sites such as Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat have blown up, and it's very rare for a young adult not to have at least one of these applications. It is really amazing how these platforms can boost and even launch a persons career; one tweet can change a persons life forever. Within my course we have been learning about the importance of social media and just how big of a role it plays within the fashion industry, and that it looks as though things can only get bigger, over the last year Snapchat has become the fastest growing app, while celebrities such as Kylie Jenner giving you a glimpse into their star studded lives.

The program runs through 3 trends each season and it really is funny to see just how many products you own or considered buying, trends these days change with such speed and being able to see what was popular from the beginning to the end of the year was so insightful and again it highlights the power of the people and how recent events can sway our purchases. For example, the 70's trend has been huge this season and there was one item that was a must on many bloggers wish list, and this was the suede split skirt from Marks and Spencer; this was worn by Alexa Chung at an event prior to the skirt's release in store and because of this, M&S had to create an online waiting list for the product, not to bad for profits when the skirt was £100!

For anyone studying a marketing/communication course I highly recommend watching this program, and to be honest it's a great watch for anyone interested in the trends the we bought into this year!

So
Until next time my lovelies,
